Weird jobs!

People usually live simple lives that don’t consist of making a living in a hazardous way – robbing a bank or blackmailing someone isn’t a socially approved method of making money. Instead, after graduation they go and find some decent job and enjoy it (or not) till their late sixties. There is a plenty of nice jobs that anyone will be satisfied with – surgeon, lawyer, teacher, manager, secretary, banker, hairdreser, handyman, go-go dancer... Acctually, that last one was rather “specific”, but that’s the point – what to do with your career if you are a rebel, free spirit that wouldn’t agree with yourself if you do something that obvious and boring. If everyday routine that starts at 9 a.m. and ends at 5 p.m. is not for you, maybe you should give a thought or two to these few ideas for a successful future job:

Otter trainer

In Bangladesh this job wouldn’t surprise anyone, but for a folk from Europe it may be a refreshing change. It may sound simple – otter tainer trains otters and takes care of them, while they are doing their job. Well trained otter is supposed to swim along river bank and direct anything edible – fish or shrimps – to fishing nets held by fishermen that are on a boat. That job is quite importand – evening meals depend on it, so otter must be obedient and properly trained. Here is a link to a video of a one day of otter trainer:

Fortune teller

If you enjoy irregular working hours, talking to strangers, making up stories and mystical aura surrounding you maybe fortune teller is a job from your dreams? Of course first you should apply for some training and pick up arcane and magical knowledge and techniques to become trustworthy and reliable fortune-teller (or just to appear as one). There are also other arrangements that must be adequatly organised: your meeting room must, as well as your apperance (having a Gypsy ancestor may be somehow useful) , seem quite odd – lots of candles (some of them could be tucked in fake skull chandeliers), stuffed alligator, crystal balls and dim light could do the trick. Some other accesories might come in handy – tarot cards set, pendulums, runestones – such things are your tools in this job. This stuff costs some money, but by way of consolation I’ll tell you that – in our country fortune tellers don’t pay taxes, because their work isn’t considered as a proper job.

Chicken sexer

Ever wanted to work with animals, but only with those that are cute, small, don’t bite and are fluffy? If so, chicken sexer is a job for you. The main goal of this occupation is to separate chickens (yes, those little yellow feather balls with beaks) – males away from females. This job even don’t require good eyesight – every chicken sexer has it’s own magnifying glass. Oh, don’t tell me that you have no idea haw to do it. Let me say that careful observation is the key. Maybe this commercial show will explain you everything:

(okay, this was quite scary, but that was only commercial spot – I think it doesn’t look so harsh for real; anyway creating commercials must be another whacky job for other sort of very interesting people – not that I’m judging by effects...)

Tester

Okay, nearly ANYTHING can be put to the test, but think about some unusual stuff, that you never thought would need testing. How about... pet food? The thing is simple –you eat the stuff provided by a pet food manufacturer and describe it’s taste, decide wheter you’d eat that or not if you were a cat or dog. Some people say that animals could do the job, but they wouldn’t tell anyone “It’s way too salty, dude.”, would they? Right. The key ability is to have tastebuds that could find out wheter cat or dog would like that kind of seasoning or not.

After eating anything it’s nice to lay down for a while or even take a nap. So maybe next step is a furniture tester? Someone must assure giant corporations like IKEA or something that their sofas/beds/armchairs are accurately comfy and worth the money. If you are a couch potato – dig in, but be aware that not anybody could do this sort of job. You need to have some... personal qualities that to me remain still covered (guess it will be something more scientific - look at the picture!).

Weed farmer

So, you’ve eaten some Whiskas, sat for hours in Tullsta armchair, checked sex of nearly 10,000 chickens, trained a dozen of otters, told several people that they will meet love of their lives this afternoon and she will be blonde called Brenda and still want more? Maybe something peaceful and quite useful this time? How about planting some weeds and then make a good use of them? Weed farmers do that for higher purpose – they give freshly rised weeds to scientists, so the guys in white laboratory overalls could research for new medicines, herbicides, pesticides or other chemical stuff that will in future improve the living of all mankind. From all of the whacky jobs served today this one seems to be most reasonable and is making sense in a way – and is not that risky like, for instance, fire-eater. Still, income might be quite questionable, but why, wouldn’t you do it for science?

These presented jobs are unusual and it is nice to think that you have an alternative when feeling fed up with conventional job, although they could be quite hard to make a living in a country like Poland – here we just don’t have a huge need for such occupations (well, maybe except fortune teller’s, but it’s just a one fat exception). Also, because of their weirdness and lack of promotion structure there is a low risk of becoming a workaholic. They are still marginal cases therefore they won’t be profitable. Still, it’s importand to remember that income is not the only thing that matters – SATISFACTION is the one that does.

  1. I totally agree with you. The matter of satisfaction is the more important key to good efficiency in work. Happy and accomplished employee is better than one who is bored and disatisfied of his job. In my opinion, this is untruth that in Poland aren't any wiered jobs - they are but they are self-effacing because of rejection someone who is different, odd. E.g. recently I wached documentary about foley artist. They use whatever they can find to create and record the noises used to make the sound effects in films, like heavy footsteps, rolling thunder or creaking doors. Or diener
who prepare cadavers for the pathologist before autopsies are performed in hospitals... This is freaky for my but someone must make this job.

  2. Well, I must admit you have chosen really uncommon and rather rare jobs, but still interesting. You introduced them as these are so normal jobs, nothing special ;-) I like the most the description you made for the pet food tester :-) Honestly, I don't know if anybody is interested in SUCH a career, but who knows... Nevertheless it is a good thing that people can look for a job among this kind of tremendous variety of different possible occupations. Only work you like can satisfy you, so it is very good to have an opportunity to choose out of many, because it's makes it more possible to pick the right one.
Who knows - maybe posting this topic you helped somebody to make a decision concerning the rest of his or her life...

  3. First of all, I have to say that you made a brilliant presentation. I’m enchanted. I didn’t know what type of job I should chose after my studies. Now I know. I’ll be chicken sexer!
It’s really astonishingly, what kind of job exists. I suppose, that people that are working as a tester or weed farmer had never been dreaming about it. There are a lot of strange and unordinary occupation, but the most important is to be satisfied with your career.
I was working as a fortune teller, but it isn’t interesting for me. You have to write or say people, what they want. You can’t write them about bad things. You have to cheat the customers by saying them that they will fall in love, win a fortune or pull through disease. Sometimes it’s really hard, because you are exhausted, you want to go home and relax. You don’t want to be nice for them and to say pleasant things all the time. For me, it isn’t a good idea to be a fortune teller.

  4. Your presentation is so interesting and makes me feel better;) I have always dreamed to be chicken sexer. I am jokeing of course:)
You showed that work can be totally different than we listen, raed on newspaper and watch in TV. This job are for people who think about sth
    unusual, wacky or strange careers.
For me money are not so important. I would like to work for pleasure, to passion and to satisfaction.

  5. Hehe, it’s interesting that we don’t aware that many people in others countries, (but probably not only in others…) have such a strange occupations. However everybody isn’t the same, so I may imagine that somewhere live people who have satisfaction during making this job :P and they thought to themselves that they are unusual What is more, in my opinion people who recognize gender chicken should be not only very quick but also they should have sober mind, because they can’t make too many mistakes One is sure, not each of work is for everybody;) regards.

  6. Wow, awsome presentation :) Last time I was laughing so loudly while reading something I was probably reading some Pratchet's book :)
And getting to the point I also belive that the most important thing in doing any job is having real satidfaction from it. If you like grow plants- grow plants, If you like cook- find your place in some restaurant. Just find place you belong to and that should do it- You will be happy :)

  7. You have prepared a great presentation. Funny and many informative. Thank's to you, now I know at last what will I occupy with in the future: I will become an otter trainer!
As somebody have already written, you show us that the job don't have to be a boring necessity and a kind of life-long burden, but a real adventure and pleasure. In Poland, where almost everyone complains about his/her job, it is really nice to see the other ways of speaking about this subject are also possible. I love this humour in your presentation :)

  8. Let me asure you: since a baby i dreamed about being a furniture tester! Especially, if it request testing if 8 hours of sleep on the bed is comfortable :)
Anyway, having an interesting job is... intersting, but presonally I couldn't have job like chicken sexer. You come home from work, bored and tired, your husband asks you "how's at work" and you say what? "as usual, males or females" and no gossips? Awful :p
So make sure your job is both at the same time interesting and fun. That will bring your work satisfaction.

  9. Your presentation was excellent!Occasionally I laughed loud.In my opinion,we need to add a few more occupations, which are very popular and usefull now:) For example: laughter therapist who get paid to help people guffaw and maybe citrus fruit colorer who is usually picked before it's ripe (someone colors the fruit
using steam and chemicals giving it a more 'natural' appealing hue).
Conclusion is clearly: to work, you should have any idea.

  10. Wow, good, very good presentasion :)I must admit taht you did a grat job. I didn't know about some of this profession. I agree with you, that specific jobs are the way to do life not boring. The second way? If daily routine (work from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.)is not for you, you should create your own business. Then, one day is different than another.

  11. I really liked the presentation. You picked interesting examples of weird jobs. I agree that it doesn't matter if the job seems to be odd or ordinary but satisfaction should be most important factor. On the other hand, it is probably hard to find a job which you would get never bored with(even the weirdest on)at least for those of us most demanding. Personally, l don't care if my future profession will be perceived as weird as long as it would be my passion ;)

  12. This presentation is really interesting :) There are so funny parts of your presentation that I was half laughing, half crying :)
I didn't know that there are so weird jobs and I'm sure that I couldn't work in some of that works. In the other hand, you have right that the most important in job is satisfaction and good attitude to occupation. We should do what we really want to do. In this way people work much more better and more effective.

  13. It must be interesting to have that kind of a job. I have to say you have chosen really unconventional ones. Satisfaction at work is one of the main things but I’m not sure if chicken sexer gets much of it (or maybe depends of the person?). I’ve also heard about another weird job – it was worker of a bat’s hotel! They keep there sick bats and care for them till they get better and after that set them free. It must be really creepy job, well it would be for me. Unless someone likes scary, flying animals…

  14. I enjoy your presetation, it is very interesting :) I had never heard about chicken sexers or otter trainers. I think that many people will enjoy that kind of job but for me it wouldn't be satisfying, even if it is unique and original. People are different and different kind of job needs, there are people who doesn't need to be unconventional - they dream about being a surgeon or lawyer even if they know that there are many persons who wants the same. I think that in every kind of job may be something unusual. But many people hate routine - they are made for weird jobs.

  15. Doing a weird job like chicken sexering or training otters must be really interesting and self-developing, but there is also another point of view on the matter. If having such a specified qualifications it must be very hard to find a job in case of dismissal or economic stagnation. Furthermore, in my opinion, even the weirdest and most intriguing job after a considerable period of time becomes boring and repetitive. Then the only solution to have satisfaction of your work is to continously change it or simply do what you're really keen on.

  16. For me one of the weides jobs is a farmer in USA. You have big field somewhere in Tennessee: from here behind horizon and you want to plant wheat. And then apperas man from gaovermant and pays you for not planting wheat, to avoid decrease of wheat price on the market. Isn't graet? :-)

  17. For me people should choose job that fulfill their expectations, no matter how strange or weird these jobs are.
In fact for me the strangest job is fishing worms breeder. This work is so repugnant that it is almost impossible to like it.

  18. Very interesting and funny - great work! The most excited is "chicken sexer".. when I was reading this paragraph I realised that it is obvious - someone has to separate all little chickens! but I hope that they have less drastic methods:)
About fortune teller - for us it is funny but think how many people trust fortune tellers.. they don't belive in God or even though in themselves and must hear words of destiny from someone very dubious.

  19. I really liked the presentation, it was great and funny :)I don't know what I can do after school. I want to have interesting job, good money for that and I want to be happy. Can it be? Maybe I will be chicken sexer and I will find everyting in this profession:):):)

  20. Nice theme :). I didn’t even know that such kinds of weird Job exists! After your presentation I have to think about changing my plans connected with future job :P. Weird jobs are really interesting topic and work in such professions make life much more happy :) You can do what you like and enjoy your job – as we know satisfaction is very difficult to manage now.
