Anxiety and depression among students

Depression and anxiety are prevalent problems among students. in the past 15 years, depression has doubled and suicide tripled, he said. According to a survey from the Anxiety Disorders Association of America(ADAA), universities and colleges also have seen an increase in students seeking services for anxiety disorders. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, 75 percent of all individuals with an anxiety disorder will experience symptoms before age 22. students deal with a unique amount of stressors. Specifically, students experience many firsts, including new lifestyle, friends, roommates, exposure to new cultures and alternate ways of thinking. If students do not feel adequate or prepared to cope with the new environment of a college campus, they could easily become susceptible to depression and anxiety.

Depression is a medical condition that can affect a p
erson’s ability to work, study, interact with people or take care of themselves. The first episode of depression often appears during the young adult years. Many factors can contribute to the onset of depression, including the presence of other emotional disorders, stress, poor nutrition, physical illness, personal loss and relationship difficulties.

Depression isn’t always easy to spot.
It may be expressed through the abuse of drugs and alcohol; sexual promiscuity; or hostile, aggressive, and risk-taking behavior. Some people may experience primarily behavioral changes, some mainly emotional changes, and still others mostly physical changes.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

  • Persistently sad, anxious, irritable or empty mood
  • Loss of interest in previously enjoyable activities, including sex
  • Withdrawal from friends and family
  • Trouble sleeping or sleeping too much
  • Feeling tired or rundown
  • Significant change in appetite and/or weight
  • Anger and rage
  • Overreaction to criticism
  • Feeling unable to meet expectations
  • Difficulty thinking, concentrating, remembering or making decisions
  • Feeling restless or agitated
  • Feelings of worthlessness, hopelessness, or guilt
  • Persistent physical symptoms such as headaches, digestive problems or chronic pain that do not respond to routine treatment
  • Substance abuse problems
  • Recurrent thoughts of death or suicide

Dealing with Depression

Medication and/or counseling can help. The majority (80-90%) of people who receive treatment for depression experience significant improvement, and almost all individuals gain some relief from their symptoms. However, if untreated, the symptoms of depression can last months to years if untreated. It is not uncommon for people who are depressed to think about suicide, and it is important to seek help immediately if you or someone you know is having these thoughts. If you think that you or someone you know may be depressed, contact your school’s health or counseling service.

Everyone feels anxious in certain situations, but anxiety disorders can make it difficult to function.

Anxiety Disorders

Anxiety is a feeling of worry that can be a completely normal response to stress. However, it can also be out of proportion to what’s going on or be impossible to control. Anxiety can feel so overwhelming that a person’s ability to work, study, interact with people, or follow a daily routine is affected. Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illnesses.
Anxiety can be a real medical condition, developing from a complex set of biological and environmental factors, including genetics, biochemistry and traumatic life events. Generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder and phobias are all types of anxiety d isorders.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

  • Intense episodes of fear or panic
  • Recurring nightmares
  • Avoidance of social situations
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Repeated, unwanted thoughts (obsessions)
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Upsetting, intrusive memories of a traumatic event
  • Physical symptoms such as nausea, stomach pain, rapid heart rate, muscle tension, sweating, shaking, dizziness, numbness, or difficulty breathing

20 tips to tame your stress
  1. Perform diaphragmatic or “deep breathing” exercises.
  2. Lie face down on the floor and begin breathing deeply and slowly, with your hands resting under your face. Do this for five minutes.
  3. Sit in a reclining chair. Put a hand on your abdomen and a hand on yo u r chest. As you breathe, make sure the hand on your abdomen is moving up and down rather than one on your chest. If the hand on your abdomen is moving you are breathing deeply and slowly.
  4. Try progressive or “deep muscle” relaxation. Progressively tense and relax each muscle group in your body. Learn the difference between muscle tension and relaxation.
  5. Meditate. Use visualization. Sit quietly with your eyes closed, imagining the sights, sounds and smells of your favorite place, such as a beach or mountain retreat.
  6. Exercise regularly or take up yoga.
  7. Consult a psychologist about the use of biofeedback.
  8. Make time for music, art or other hobbies that help relax and distract you.
  9. Learn to identify and monitor stressors. Come up with an organized plan for handling stressful situations. Be careful not to overgeneralize negative reactions to things.
  10. Make a list of the important things you need to handle each day. Try to follow the list so you feel organized and on top of things. Put together a coping plan step by step so you have a sense of mastery.
  11. Keep an eye on things that might suggest you’re not coping well. For example, are you smoking or drinking more or sleeping less?
  12. Keep a list of the large and little hassles in your day versus the major stressful events in your life; this helps you focus on the fact that you’re keeping track of and managing those as well as you can.
  13. Set aside a time every day to work on relaxation.
  14. Avoid caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, junk food, binge eating and other drugs.
  15. Say no occasionally.
  16. Get the right amount of sleep. For most people, this is seven to 10 hours a night.
  17. Cultivate a sense of humor; laugh.
  18. Research has shown that having a close, confiding relationship protects you from many stresses.
  19. Don’t run from your problems! This only makes them worse.
  20. Talk to your family and friends. See if they can help.

  1. I am very up-to-date with the topic of depression now, but no! luckily I'm not depressed, but I have just finished an essay for my studies about how Freud explains this phenomenon. ;)

I think that the most disturbing thing is that depression never appears suddenly. It is very deceitful and it develops very slowly, so it's hard to notice what's happening. It's like the childrens growth: you don't see the child growing, but you can notice the effects of this process after some time. So the depression usually becomes visible when it's fully developed, when an ill person becomes unable to live in a normal way.

So I think it's important to talk and learn about this disorder and it's symptoms. It will allow us to notice what's going on earlier and to start the treatment before the depression will make us (or friends, or someone from the family) unable to get up in the morning.

  2. I think that all of us are "up-to-date" with depression... suffering it or knowing people that have this problem or maybe only watching TV programs about it. I believe that the problem is in recovering from that destroying illness. Going to the psychiatrist in our society isn't common and we consider it as sth bad.

  3. I don't anybody, who have or had depresion. But I think it is something "natural". I mean, it could happen to everyone at any time. Of course new situations, like studing in other town, far away from home or some big failure could make it easier to fall in depresion.
I think that the worest thing is to escape from the world. If it happens to you, you should go outside, meet friends etc, instead of sitting at home and do nothing.

  4. I don't know anybody (including myself ;)) who has/had a real depression so I was a little bit surprised that it is such a commonplace. However, I can believe it. In my opinion, the problem is so serious because it still is thought to be a "tabu" and people are ashamed to ask for help of specialists or even close ones. What is more, the a big and unseen part of the issue are people suffering some mild depression-like symptoms such as low self-evaluation and looking in future without any hope.

  5. According to the researchers and medical practitioners depression is as same as any other illness-in my opinion it's very important information. Many people (especially in Poland!)unnecessarily ashamed of this disease.
Like any other serious medical condition, depression needs to be handled effectively and carefully. The problem with depression unfortunately is that it is a mental illness and the world today does not look at it as a proper disease. People do not recognize that depression is a treatable illness. Due to this fact, many people who can be cured are not able to pull through.

  6. Stress and anxiety is something that we are going to deal with for whole our life, so you better get used to :P Seriously, it's not the reason that makes us anxiety but, how we react to things. When people arond start to panic most of you would probably feel uneasy too. It's really easy to control your stress level for example with deep breathing and yoga as it was said in presentation. It a bit more difficult if we are talking about depression. I get really chilly when I hear about it. It awful how people shut themsleves from others. In my opinion when it gets really hard you can make a use of pills, of course the ones that are least harmful. It's also good to visit a specialist, who will probably know the best way of dealing with depression.

  7. Currently people live under pressure because of problems with family, problems in work ect. so depression is very common disease. Prersonally, I don't know any preson with this problem but I heard that isn't only a psychical problem. Also ill people go to the wall phisically.
In my opinion, it doesn't settle for to go to the doctor. Anxiety and depression is very hard to recuperate. Ill person should find relaxing hobbies (joga or sport) and should talk a lot with family, friends and doctor to rebuilt mental peace. The most important is to know that every problem is easy to hurdle and them everything seem to be simple.

  8. Nowadays depression is a very disease, because of our style of life. We live to fast, we want to achieve success at all costs, but some people are too weak to withstand the pressure. Personally I know two person who suffered from depression. They had to go to the psychiatrists and psychologists. I suppose that it takes time to heal a depression, because they are treated for depression long period of time. For sure, medicines and medical care are indispensable.

  9. I’m sure that everybody knows somebody who had/have depression. It is not subject to talk about it to all people. So, majority people who have depression don’t public it everybody. However, sometimes is popular, “trendy” saying that “oł, I have depression” but it is not true. After one day, two, three we may only say that we are only sad. Depression occur after dying somebody, who is very important, after some unexpected accident or after parting with boyfriend or girlfriend.
Depression Is very serious problem, and not everybody know how to win with this. If you have soft depression, will be ok, but If you know for example somebody who have deep depression You should find somebody who help him.

  10. I agree that deppression isn't an invention of our times - since its early beginings mankind was meeting various dangers. In far past the main danger was coming from nature and its creatures, today most of civilisated people have not much in common with nature, but have credits and loans to pay, demanding job and health problems - this all circumstances are deciding of today's anxieties and depression character. What is sad, is that even youngest children are under the increasing pression of their environment. Parents, teachers and contemporaries are personification of nowadays highly demanding world, so when can they time for relaxation and enjoying life?

  11. I have never been depressed for a long time, but I am sure that it is very tiring and hard (also for family and friends). Maybe the best way to fight with depression and anxiety is to prevent them? I think about some exercises at school: "muddle through stress, new circumstances, new friends, new school" with psychologists or character-trainers.

  12. This theme Has really grave importance. Sometimes it is very hard to manage with your problems when you are away from home and have no help from other people. I think that especially for the first year students it is extremely difficult to turn up in new society so we should create some organization which would help students with emotional problems.

  15. Depression among students is frequent. Nowadays one faculty is not sufficient. Young people study two or three faculty and work as a part-timer or full-timer. They must live by something. Moreower, stress in home, in school or in job. Many factor could maximize.
We should have more free time and, what sings Mika:"relax, take it easy".

Students are under the pression of their studies, they want to have good job, a lot of money but sometimes their ambitions may outgrow that persons. Students should take care about their time to relax becouse it is important in our life.
