EMO!

EMO STANDS FOR EMOTIONAL!

First it was a style of rock music typically characterized by melodic musicianship and expressive, often confessional lyrics., now it becomes a big subculture.

Refering to Wikipedia.org (to find more click here):
“Today emo is commonly tied to both music and fashion as well as an inspiration toward the emo subculture, and the term "emo" is sometimes stereotyped with tight jeans on males and females alike, long fringe (bangs) brushed to one side of the face or over one or both eyes, dyed black, straight hair, tight t-shirts (usually short-sleeved) which often bear the names of emo bands (or other designer shirts), studded belts, belt buckles, canvas sneakers or skate shoes or other black shoes and thick, black horn-rimmed glasses. This fashion has at times been characterized as a fad. Early on, emo fashion was associated with a clean cut look but as the style spread to younger teenagers, the style has become darker, with long bangs and emphasis on the colour black replacing sweater vest. In recent years the popular media have associated emo with a stereotype that includes being emotional, sensitive, shy, introverted, or angst-ridden. It is also associated with depression, self-injury, and suicide.”

I will try to show the most important EMO’s features. Let’s start!

  1. I treat emo as any other subculture, like punks, goths, skinheads etc. They are indifferent for me, unless their buisness won't cross my buisness. Let they live, wear their clothes, listen their music and do wathever they want, but without me.
By the way: I have heard many jokes about emo, but I won't tell them here, because someone could say that I'm intolerant...

  2. I first heard of EMO from a friend who is on medical studies. She presented it as a kind of personality disorder of which signs are feeling of hopelessness and senselessness in life etc. I had no idea that a whole subculture grew up or maybe was built up around it. I have mixed fillings about this idea but as with any other subculture I try to be tolerant. If people find themselves in this subculture it's their business not mine and it's not me to judge them.

  3. For me, EMO it's a genre, like R&B or Pop. It does not mean "emotional", that's just a definition that's been invented by someone.
I don't completely understand this subculture.
I've been asking people to tell me what emo is and most of my friends (students) consist of "it's just a form of expressing yourself" or "it just means really emotional",but they also couldn't tell more about this young poeple. Maybe we are already too old to understand it?

  4. The question is why this subculture idea get only to young people? Probably it's only my impression, but it's very popular amoung teenagers. Maybe because it's outstanding so many young people get interested with it or maybe it's just a fashion like any other.
I've never been in any subculture ( or maybe ther is something like mediocre subculture?)so I don't have experiences. What is weird for me is that they follow the rules, like they always cut hair in style or wear characteristic clothes. What if some emo girl wake up one day and feel like wearing white flowerish skirt?
Also someone told me that emo people are sad just because of the fact they are emo. If it's true, than for me it's sensless.

  5. I heard sentence that EMO is emotional unstable teenagers subculture. I think it is partially true. I can't understand why teenagers flaunt so hard with their mental state. Generally, I don't have to wear specisic clothes and haircut to be sad or depressed. This is rediculous... In the other hand, people who love this kind of music (fans) should be admired because they are ready to commit and to wear this mask. For me it't senseless.
By the way, nice presentation, beetle :) I'm gonna change my wardrobe if I fall into depression :)

  6. First of all I want to say that your presentation is very interesting. I suppose that is essential of EMO. Besides, I have never consider if EMO is a subculture or just fashion and music style. I doubt that there is any authentic idea behind it. I rather suppose that teenagers are group of people, that is extremely vulnerable to such things. Moreover, every person grow up and I suppose that also EMO teenagers grow out of this subculture. It is only matter of time.

  7. Emo is not only subculture but also new way for life. This is special form of dressing, which is interesting for young people. Years time ago, young people revolted against parents, teachers. Youth had flowers in hair and boys had long hair, they sang and played on guitar Nirvana melodies. This was form on spend free time and their adolescence.
Now we have EMO, and this is also form of molding personality, views, the first relationship.

However, we should also notice that in small city, like this where I come from. I haven’t ever seen any Emo. Its new fashion, but very controversial, so in small cities young people are afraid of this what will say their neighbors, they afraid of bad acceptance.

  8. I don't like to put kinds of music in "drowers" but EMO music (and lyrics)makes that I want put it on drower and close it :)
A few ears ago I liked bands like Green Day or Happysad but when they started to be listened by EMO they lost my symphaty.
Last holiday I was on rock festival with my friends. There was also some emos. I have known they as poeople who are big crocks and misery. They rarely use their brains and are very stubborn. That's my point of view ;)

  9. I think that emo are just pathetic. Emo means to me - 'I'm just too lazy to do something with my life, I would rather sit and cry'. Come on! This is the way of thinking good for losers! And I don't understand their passion in wearing same clothes - boys and girls. I've read somewhere about a guy, who was walking down the street. He saw two emos. He thought - boy-emo and girl-emo. When he was closer he realized that both of them was girls. But when he was one meter from them, he understood that they were two emo gays...

  10. I agree with Łukasz - they are to lazy to do something with their lives, but also EMOs haven't any help from parents (the most emo teenagers are from rich families where parents are workaholics), teachers and other no-emo colleagues. My friend who is a psychologist and work in trust-phone (or something like that) told me that a lot of emos call this number. their problem is mostly being spurn and without any support from the closest people. Please, don't judge anyone.

  11. I would like to present my opinion about EMO style. Firstly, I don’t like emo subculture, because it has became something strange and dangerous. Secondly, young people wearing dark clothes and make up have also dark psyche. They can hurt themselves and later regret that they was a part of this subculture. Emo music is sometimes nice, but can cause depression. On balance, I thing that we should be more seriously about EMO.

  12. For me Emo are very strange subculture. I claim, that it is reaction for contemporary, comercial lifestyle which are present in western countries. Young people can't find object of mutiny, so they must show their sadness and inside pain. In my opinion their untipycal clothes and hairstylies are answer for identity problems. We should express our emotins, but we can't restrict only to passive attitute to world. People must co-operate with others. We won't do anything if we only show our pain and suffering.

  13. I heard that Emo is a subculture but also new way for life. For me it's very strange that young people (15/16 year) are always sad and unhappy with the live. Is sick! They wera dark clothes, bizarre hair, dark shous with red shoe-lace. Sometimes I can't see the differnce between the girl and the boy. It's craze but we need the time and our civilization will be better.

  14. Emo is the funniest thing that passed my way since I've heard about disco-polo culture. I'm trying not to criticise and judge but I really can't help it that I find it riddiculously funny. They are sitting in the buses with big earphones, they have one eye only and they have meetings in shop centres to cry by the windows of shops that own T-shirts with skulls and they have arms covered by scarfs made by razor blades to express their feelings. There are black-rubber bulbs for sale for emo kids on some websites and their ad says: "Don't sit in the cruel light of day- sit alone in the dark where your soul lies weeping!"... and yes, the buy it.

  15. I am very tolerant person and I have nothing against Emo but this subculture is funny for me. And I think that when Emo people wil be adult they will laugh at themselves.
Emo are teenagers who complain of their life and they think that everything is hopeless. They wears strange clothes becouse they must to be distinguished in the crowd.
But everyone must to express one's emotions and if it's only way to do that for them - it's ok.
